Wednesday, 24th February 2010 - The House

So the house is not the happiest place at the moment. Jack and Claire have decided to move out because of the Prison Guards (aka Sue and the other people who own the house). She stomps around the place with a big bunch of keys and keeps telling us off for things that frankly are not our responsibility. Becky and I are dead keen to leave here anyway, and so is Katy now.

So hopefully we will find somewhere they allow you to socialize and allow conversation after 10pm. Note to all. Never stay at The Deck hostel in Australia. They have ants in the kitchen, the shower is either scalding hot or freezing cold and the people who run the place are crazy. Oh and there is a crazy man in the hostel next door who walks around in circles and talks to himself all day.

Tuesday, 23rd February 2010 - Welcome Iris

Massive congratulations to Julia and Becky with their beautiful baby Girl, Iris.

Saturday, 20th February 2010 - The Valley

Shaun had flown over from Darwin to see Emma. They were both out in the Valley having a few drinks. Me and Becky went to meet them. Now I was still hungover from the previous nights drinking. So I could not face the beer. Instead I got stuck into the Rum and Coke. At about 01:00 I had to call it a day.

Friday, 19th February 2010 - The curious incident with the police cone

So after a hard weeks work. Becky and I decided to indulge oursevles in some alcohol beverages. Now Katy had gone to Matt's. Claire and Jack joined me and Becky and between the 4 of us we consumed a slab of beer and six bottles of Rose wine.

Now we was a little merry and then decided it was a good idea to sneak under the house next door and have a look around. All the houses around here are built on stilts you see. Well we found a traffic cone, bizarre I know and decided in our drunker state that we would adopt it.

Now we hadn't seen much of Katy lately, with working and her seeing Matt, so we decided that we would sculpt Katy so that she would always be here with us. LOL. Just have a look. LOL.

Tuesday, 16th February 2010 - Storms bring flash flooding to southeast Queensland

SEVERE thunderstorms have swept across Queensland's southeast, with flash-flooding washing away hundreds of cars down Brisbane roads.

The storms struck at about noon (AEST) today, producing thousands of lightning strikes, strong winds and heavy rain.

Strathpine, Brisbane and Logan were among the hardest hit areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said the Brisbane CBD received more than 92mm of rain since 10am (AEST), leaving some of the city's roads under water and bringing traffic to a standstill.

Weatherzone.com.au reported the city received its heaviest 10-minute downpour of rain in at least eight years, receiving 25mm just after 11.40am (AEST).

Other suburbs that experienced heavy downfalls included Rochedale (105mm), Priestdale (99mm) and Carbrook (93mm).

In the Brisbane westside suburb of Milton, localised flooding carried cars down streets, with reports of over 200 cars being washed away between Milton and Windsor.

One Milton resident, Tom Goldman, tried to drive his car through the severely flooded Haig Road, only to have the engine stall.

Despite the damage to his vehicle, he said he had no regrets running the gauntlet through the one-metre-deep water.

"Because feeling the sensation of floating in a car down a street is something that everyone has to experience at least once in their life,'' he said.

Further down Haig Road, a commercial artist - who wanted to be known only as Raj - said the water had risen over his house's front step and damaged his carpet.

"Come in, please take pictures, it may even help me with my insurance claim,'' he said.

Vehicles in Woolloongabba and East Brisbane were also swamped and the Department of Transport's computer systems in Spring Hill were flooded, forcing the evacuation of the building's two lowest levels.

Meanwhile, the lower levels of the Bank of Queensland and Vodafone businesses in the CBD were also flooded.

Energex said more than 70,000 homes and businesses between the Sunshine Coast and Beenleigh were at one stage affected by power outages.

They have also recorded thousands of lightning strikes.

People have been warned not to swim in flooded creeks or drive their cars through floodwaters.

The Department of Community Safety says while they have not yet had to make any rescues, State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers responded to 75 jobs, including roof leaks and minor flooding.

The wild weather shut down a rail line in Brisbane and Queensland Rail (QR) has advised passengers on all train lines to expect delays of up to 30 minutes.

Alternative transport is being arranged between Dutton Park and Yeerongpilly stations, and 90-minute delays are expected, QR says.

Rail and bus passengers across the commuter network have also been warned to expect delays of up to 45 minutes.

Meanwhile the weather bureau is warning that severe thunderstorms are on the way for areas between Gympie near the Sunshine Coast and Beaudesert west of the Gold Coast this evening.

Very heavy rainfall and flash flooding are likely.

Monday, 15th February 2010 - Lightening Storm

There was a really great and eery storm. It had been ridiculously hot day, well over 30C with a humidity of 75%. After dark, the sky was lit up with lightening. There was no thunder and no rain. Just loads of clouds and these were lit up by the lightening.

It looked really cool and really surreal. Looked like Alien's were landing or something.

Saturday, 13th February - Graveyard shift in the ER

So my shift was canceled on the ICU. But they offered me a shift in the Emergency Department in Logan. No Logan is about 70km away. Normally I would never think of traveling that far for one shift, but this is Australia and 70km is not really far at all. Some people travel 70km and do not even reach their next door neighbors.

So off I went and got the hour long train to Logan. The ED was great, had really good shift. Was in the Majors/Acute area. Had my own team of patients. Few dramas but now traumas. Was a great laugh. Definitely go back there again.

Friday, 12th February 2010 - Mixing the grape and grain

Emma came over and the four of us had a BBQ. Originally Becky and I were going to have had the meat yesterday but I was called into work early. So I fired up the BBQ and Emma and Becky went off to get chips from BurgerUrge. The steak was amazing and really cheap as well. Only cost $6.

So off I went to work. All day I had been praying to get canceled and but no. So I rock up at allocations to find out where I am supposed to be working. Only to find out that they did not need me and there was some mix up. So I was not annoyed because they had to pay a two hour cancellation fee. I got back to the house and joined Becky, Emma, Jack and Claire. We polished off the crate of beer. Emma passed out shortly followed by Jack and Claire. Leaving me and Becky. So Claire said we could have her wine, so we diligently polished off those bottles as well. Before heading out to the Valley to get a big fat dirty Kebab at half two in the morning.

Tuesday, 9th February 2010 - Wasted

Emma came over again and we got back on the booze. Again. Katy's Matt came over and brought a friend who's name I don't know. Jack and Claire joined us and we all got a little merry. Until we got told to keep it quiet by the German girl who shares the house with us, at about 9pm! So we carried on a little quieter. Till someone in the hostel nest door told us to be quiet as well.

We were all sure we would get a note posted under our door again. But alas seems we have escaped eviction this time. I passed out a bit later on. So luckily missed out on the carnage that prevailed. Emma and Becky ended up going out into the Valley. Katy and Matt went off for a walk. Now some how Katy ended up sleeping outside on a sofa.

Katy came back to the hostel after the girls had gone out. She saw the door was closed and assumed she was locked out, before even trying the door. LOL. Not to mention that the window on the porch leads into hers and Becky's room and is really easy to climb in through. But Katy decided to sleep on the couch with all the insects and creepy crawlys. LOL. Till the morning hours when Becky and Emma came back. Funniest bit is Katy accused them of locking her out. Even though both doors where open. LOL. Funny times.

Monday,8th February 2010 - BurgerUrge

At the end of the street is a gourmet Burger place. BurgerUrge. It does the most amazing burgers. I have never seen anything like it. It is always packed out. Brisbane has two of these places, one in New Farm and the other in Teneriffe.

You have to see them to believe them. I had a Lamb burger with halumi, pesto, salad and onion relish. It was a beast and I could not manage to eat a whole one. Which for me is really saying something.

Friday, 5th February 2010 - More drinking

So I got home from work about 8:30. Becky was already home. Friday drinks where called for. We started off with a few in the house with Jack and Claire. But soon ran out. Jack and Claire was off to the really rough pub across the road. So me and Becky went.

It was a kewl. I liked it. They had a round pool table. How bizzare? Becky was a little drun and dropped her glass and smashed it everywhere, to top things off it was a brand new pint. Claire was absolutely wasted and Jack had to take her home. Me and Becky staggered home.

But by the looks of the house on Saturday morning we must have been wasted. The front door was open, Becky's bedroom door was open and the fridge door was open. I think I might of gone sleep walking again. LOL

Wednesday, 3rd February 2010 - Ouch!

So after not doing much yesterday thanks to our awful hangovers I decided I was going to be productive. So off I went to South Bank. Sunbathed for about an hour and then went to look around the Brisbane's Museum. Mostly about wildlife and sea creatures but was interesting.

But when I got home I had burning pain in my back and had a look in the mirror and I was sun burnt. Thats the first time in three months I have burnt and gone red. I am still using P20. I swear by it. But god the sun down here is strong. It's scray.

Tuesday, 2nd February 2010 - The Lovely Bones (2010)

The Lovely Bones is a 2002 novel by Alice Sebold. It is the story of a teenage girl who, after being murdered, watches from heaven as her family and friends go on with their lives, while she herself comes to terms with her own death. The novel received a great deal of critical praise and became an instant bestseller. A film adaptation of the novel was released earlier this year.  I read the book some years ago and was keen to see the movie adaptation.

On December 6, 1973 in Norristown, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, Susie Salmon takes a shortcut home from her school. She is approached by a neighbor, George Harvey, a man in his mid-30s who lives alone and builds doll houses for a living. He persuades her to enter an underground den he has recently built nearby. He claims that he built it for the kids in the neighborhood. Once she enters, he rapes her and then murders her, dismembering her body and putting it in a safe. Susie's spirit flees toward her personal heaven.
The Salmon family is at first reluctant to accept that Susie has been killed, but then accepts this when Susie's hat was found. The police talk to Harvey, find him odd but see no other reason to suspect him. Jack, Susie's father, becomes suspicious and later begins to obsess about Harvey. Susie's sister Lindsey comes to share these suspicions. Jack, consumed with guilt over not having been able to protect his daughter, remains on extended leave from work and increasingly isolates himself at home, although he becomes very close with his son, Buckley-- the youngest child, who tries to make sense of all this as he starts school.
One day late in the summer a detective named Len Fenerman comes to tell the Salmons that the police have exhausted all leads and are dropping the investigation. That night in his study, Jack looks out the window and sees a flashlight in the cornfield. Believing it to be Harvey returning to destroy evidence, he runs out to confront him with a baseball bat. It turns out to be Susie's best friend, Clarissa, and her boyfriend Brian. Brian and Jack struggle, and Brian hits Jack with the bat. As a result he has to have knee replacement surgery. In the wake of this, his wife Abigail begins having an affair with Fenerman, who is a widower.
Still suspicious, Lindsey sneaks into Harvey's house and finds and steals a drawing of the pit, but is forced to leave when Harvey returns prematurely. Sensing danger, Harvey leaves Lansdale as soon as possible and becomes a drifter. A year later the police bulldoze the cornfield and turn up a Coke bottle from the night of the murder with Harvey's and Susie's fingerprints, finally making him an official suspect. However, he remains at large. That fall, a hunter in Connecticut discovers the body of another one of Harvey's victims, and one of Susie's charms nearby. In 1981, a detective in Connecticut links the charm to Susie's murder and calls Fenerman. As they uncover further evidence, the police realize that Harvey is a serial killer who preys on young girls. At about the same time, Susie sees into his traumatic childhood, and develops a grudging pity for her killer.

The following winter Abigail leaves her husband, going to her father's old cabin in New Hampshire and then moving to California, taking a job at a winery. As a result, her eccentric mother, Grandma Lynn, moves into the Salmons' home to help her son-in-law care for Buckley and Lindsey.

Lindsey and her boyfriend Samuel Heckler become engaged, find an old house in the woods owned by a classmate's father, and decide to fix it up and live there. Sometime after the celebration, while arguing with Buckley, Jack suffers from a heart attack. The emergency prompts Abigail to return from California, but the reunion is tempered by Buckley's lingering bitterness at her for having abandoned him and his father.

Meanwhile, Harvey returns to Norristown, which has become more developed. He explores his old neighborhood and notices the school is being expanded into the cornfield where he murdered Susie. He drives by the sinkhole where Susie's body rests, and where Ruth Connors and Ray Singh are standing. Ruth, an old classmate of Susie's who had felt Susie's spirit go past her after her murder, senses the women Harvey has killed and is overcome. Susie, looking down from heaven, is also overwhelmed with emotion and the two girls exchange positions. Susie, her spirit now in Ruth's body, connects with Ray, who had a crush on Susie in school, and had made plans to go out with her a few days before the murder. Ray senses Susie's presence, and takes advantage of the fact he has Susie back with him for the time being. The two go to the back room in Hal Heckler's (the older brother of Lindsey's boyfriend Samuel) bike shop and have sex. Afterward, Susie returns to heaven.

She moves on into the larger heaven, still watching earthbound events from time to time. She sees her sister's newborn baby girl, who is named Abigail Suzanne. One day she spies Harvey getting off a Greyhound bus at a diner in New Hampshire in early spring. Behind the diner he sees a young woman and attempts to speak to her, but she rebuffs him. Susie notices some large icicles hanging from the roof, and after the woman leaves, one falls and hits Harvey on the head, knocking him into a nearby ravine and ultimately killing him.

Tuesday, 2nd February 2010 - Happy Birthday Victoria xxx

Monday, 1st February 2010 - Drinks!

So it was arranged that we would go to the coast Tuesday and Wednesday. But the weather forecast was appalling so we decided to stay in Brisbane. So we were free to have some drinks. Becky was meeting a Doctor she knew from home. So Emma and me tagged along. Started off on the Bundaberg and coke but ended up on the beer. We were steaming drunk. After eating a whole Dona Kebab we made our trek home from the valley. We got chased some of the way hom by some blokes who took a shine to Becky. In her rush to escape Becky decided she needed 4 wheels. Found a shopping trolley and got in it. I pushed Becky half way down Harcourt Street, narely missing all the parked cars.

It was hilarious. Until disaster stroke. Although it was pretty funny. We pulled up outside the house and somehow the trolley tipped over with Becky in it. She took a whack to the head and laid there motionless for a minute. Emma and I was still hysterical, but worried that if we called an ambulance it would cost $$$$$$. And our insurance does not cover Shopping Trolley Accidents. Anyway, Becky some came round and we made it into the house alive. Not before Emma got a cheeky proposition from some passing motorist.
